Kite Origins

It is likely that kites were first “invented” in China and not other places as a result of a combination of factors.  Chinese access to bamboo, a very light, strong and pliable wood for making frames and the rice steamer to bend the bamboo, silk, a very strong and light material for making kite sails, and silk thread which make excellent kite-lines, made it possible for them to really explore kite design, kite making and flying.  It is likely that several other factors contributed to the important role kites played in Chinese history.  The fact that the Chinese were accomplished sailors, and used their extensive study of the wind as a tool for navigation, and that their culture valued fine crafts to celebrate special events were also important factors.
