Every student looks forward to art day. After all, it’s an excuse to get creative, get messy and let their imagination soar.
As an art teacher you’ve likely tried dozens of different lessons. Some have been great … and some not so great. But you want to try something new. That creative edge is part of why you’re the art teacher after all.
So this year, why not try an art project that’s completely different?
Kite Decorating: The Ultimate Classroom Art Project Idea
Kites are an art project with no bounds. With individual expression at the helm, no two kites will ever be the same.
Students can have the freedom to decorate their kite however they please using crayons, markers, pencil crayons or collage. Or, you can take a more guided approach and ask them to decorate their kites with self-portraits, favourite animals or even flags of countries.
And after they’ve decorated their kites, there’s nothing more satisfying for students than seeing their colourful creations take to the sky.
Even the most boisterous students will enjoy themselves flying their kites outdoors. It can be a challenge to find a genuine reason to go outside. Not so with our projects.
More than Art
Kites are an excellent classroom art project idea, but they’re also a fun way to get your students excited about a variety of topics. While they can be used as a standalone classroom art project, you can also weave them into your curriculum by focusing on what you enjoy and what you want your students to know. Kites can even be used as a jump-off point for a mini-unit about the physics of flight, the history of kites or the culture of kites around the world. I.e. they’re a great opportunity for interdisciplinary learning.
And while spring is the perfect time to fly a kite, don’t forget that kites are fun in any season. They’re great for a blustery fall day, and are a fun way shake the winter blues from your classroom.
